Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed India’s concerns regarding the “unresolved” issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh to Chinese President Xi Jinping during talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra gave this information on Thursday. According to Kwatra, the Prime Minister underlined that maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas and respecting the LAC is essential for the normalization of India-China relations. In this regard, the Foreign Secretary said, the two leaders agreed to instruct their respective authorities to expedite the withdrawal of troops and intensify efforts to de-escalate.
Kwatra said Modi held talks with the leaders of the grouping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg. It is learned that Modi and Xi Jinping held talks on Wednesday. Kwatra said Modi spoke to Xi on the sidelines of the summit and conveyed India’s concerns, including the importance of respecting the Line of Actual Control for normalizing ties. The Foreign Secretary said, “The Prime Minister interacted with other BRICS leaders on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. In a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Prime Minister mentioned India’s concerns on the unresolved issues along the LAC in the western sector of the India-China border areas. And maintaining harmony and respecting LAC is essential for normalizing India-China relations.
“In this regard, the two leaders agreed to direct their respective authorities to expedite withdrawal of troops and intensify efforts to de-escalate tensions,” Kwatra said. The government refers to the eastern Ladakh sector as the western sector. Relations between India and China came under strain after the border standoff in eastern Ladakh started in May, 2020. Indian and Chinese troops are locked in a standoff at some places in eastern Ladakh even as both sides completed the process of disengagement from several areas after extensive diplomatic and military talks. India and China held the 19th round of Corps Commander-level talks on August 13 and 14 with a focus on resolving outstanding issues in the standoff areas of Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh.
