Pakistan Petrol Pump Shut Down: A big news is coming from Pakistan which is going through a bad phase of the economy. It is reported that amidst the huge shortage of fuel, many petrol pumps have been closed in major and small cities of Punjab in Pakistan. The situation seems to be worst in some big cities like Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad, where many petrol stations have either run out of oil or have only residual stock which is about to expire. Pakistan’s oil companies are on the verge of ‘collapse’ due to severe economic crisis and currency devaluation. Pakistan is facing a balance of payments problem, and the falling value of the rupee is increasing the cost of imported goods.
About 70 of the total 450 pumps in Lahore are dry, Khawaja Atif, information secretary of the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, told Dawn. The areas where pumps are closed due to shortage of petrol include Shahdara, Wagah, Liton Road and Jain Mandar. According to local media, the supply of petrol has been limited in many cities of Pakistan and it is a serious situation. Most gas stations are closed. Some are open and those that provide only small amounts of gasoline. There are long queues of cars and bikes at these gas stations. Talking about other cities, he said that almost 70 per cent of the pumps in Gujranwala did not have petrol due to short supply from oil marketing companies. Apart from this, there is no petrol at many pumps in Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal and other districts for several days.
