Philippines Ferry Fire: A passenger ferry caught fire in the southern Philippines, killing 31 people. The passenger ferry that caught fire was used to transport passengers to the local area. The local administration is trying to ascertain the cause of the fire which broke out on Wednesday night on Basilan Island. Most of the passengers were sleeping in air-conditioned cabins on the lower deck of the ferry when the fire broke out.

Commodore Richard Marfe, coast guard chief of the Southern Mindanao region, responded to the fire on Basilan Island. The chief of the NY Coast Guard said 10 people were initially pulled from the water. He died due to drowning. Another 18 people were later rescued from the passenger ferry cabin. They got completely burnt.

Basilan Governor Jim Hutman Soliman said that the death toll in the incident was 31. According to him, after the fire, it was first learned that 13 people had died in this incident. Later 18 more bodies were found. Basilan’s governor said that many of the rescued people jumped off the ferry “MV Lady Mary J2” in fear of the fire. They were retrieved from the sea with the help of the Philippine Coast Guard, the Navy, another ship and local fishermen.
It is not clear how many people were traveling on the ferry. The official said that there were not a large number of people on board the boat. A total of 230 people, including 35 crew members, have been rescued from the boat, the Philippine Coast Guard said. Coast Guard chief Commodore Richard Marfe said the fire caused panic among people traveling on the boat.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control on Thursday morning. The burning boat was towed back to shore. Where Coast Guard personnel and local officials found 18 more bodies. The Philippine Coast Guard shared a photo of the incident. In which “MV Lady Mary J2” ferry has been set on fire.

There have been many maritime accidents in the Philippines. In which there is often a crowd of ships, boats, ferries or ferrymen. Many old ships are also used. Due to which many accidents happen while traveling in the sea. In May last year, a Philippine speedboat carrying 134 people caught fire. 7 people died in this incident. This was the worst incident since 1987. When the Dona Paz ferry carrying more passengers collided with an oil tanker near the island of Mindoro, south of the country’s capital Manila. About 5,000 people died in this incident.
