Manila. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the alert level for Mayon, the most active volcano on the southernmost tip of Luzon Island, where there is a possibility of volcanic eruption due to increased geological activity.
The institute has raised the alert level of the 2,460-meter Mayon volcano in Albay province, about 500 km southeast of Manila, to two from five, which means that the kind of movement under the earth can never be considered violent. Dangerous magma can be seen on the surface in the form of eruptions.
Recent incidents of rock fall from the lava dome of the volcano have been observed which is a sign of increasing geological activity. Since April 01, the institute has recorded 318 rock fall events and 26 volcanic earthquakes. The institute warned the people of the province to stay away from the danger zone of 06 km radius of the volcano and to watch out for explosions, rockslides and landslides. Caution urged.
It urged the civil aviation authorities to advise pilots to avoid flying close to the summit of the volcano as the ash flying in case of any sudden eruption can be dangerous for the aircraft. Popular tourist destination due to its conical shape Mayon is the country’s most active volcano, having erupted more than 50 times in the past 400 years. The Philippine Islands are surrounded by the “Ring of Fire” of the Pacific Ocean and are prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
