Islamabad. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has suspended one of its crew members who was briefly detained by Canadian authorities along with two others. This information was received from a media news on Saturday. The crew members were detained for possessing the passport of an unrelated person. This incident has happened at a time when Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is facing the problem of crew shortage.
According to ‘Dawn’ newspaper, Hina Sani was detained in Canada along with two other crew members. These members were on duty with him on flight PK-789 from Lahore to Toronto. However, the three crew members were later released and allowed to return to Pakistan after investigation. The PIA management later suspended Sani and said it would take further action as per the investigation report by Canadian authorities, Dawn newspaper reported.
It is against international law to carry someone else’s passport while traveling abroad. PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan said the airline management is in touch with Canadian authorities and is cooperating with them in the matter. He said that following the investigation report by Canadian authorities, further departmental and legal action will be taken against the suspended crew member. The spokesperson said the three female crew members would return to Pakistan on Saturday. According to PIA, at least eight flight attendants have left the job in the last one and a half years.
A spokesman for the state-owned airline told Canada’s CTV News that he has left his job and is understood to have sought asylum in Canada. PIA spokesperson Khan said at least eight flight attendants “went missing” after taking off for Pearson International Airport in Toronto. He said these incidents were being seen for the last 10 years, but recently. More cases of this have been reported in India. “We may have seen a significant increase in the number of people seeking refuge outside the country, probably from October 2022 onwards,” Khan said in an interview with ‘CTV News’ from Karachi.
