Addressing a huge gathering of members of the Indian community in Paris, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that an agreement has been reached for the use of the Unified Payments System or UPI in France. In his address, PM Modi also announced the opening of a new Indian consulate in Marseille and said that Indian students pursuing their masters in France will now get a five-year post-study work visa. Earlier, Indian students were given a two-year work visa. In his nearly one-hour speech, PM Modi underlined India’s fast-paced development and said that while the world is moving towards a new order, India’s strength and role are also changing very rapidly.
An agreement has been reached regarding the use of India’s UPI in France. In the coming days, it will be started from Eiffel Tower and now Indian tourists will be able to pay in Rupees through UPI at Eiffel Tower. In 2022, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), a major provider of UPI services, signed an MoU with France’s fast and secure online payment system called Lyra. UAE, Bhutan and Nepal have already adopted the UPI payment system.
This year, UPI and Singapore’s PayNow signed an agreement, allowing users from both countries to conduct cross-border transactions. NPCI International is in talks to expand UPI services to the US, other European countries and West Asia. PM Modi said in his address that the last time I came to France, it was decided that Indian students studying in France would be given a 2-year work visa after their studies. Now, it has been decided that Indian students pursuing Masters in France will be given long term work visas.
