PM Modi will attend BRICS summit: African Foreign Minister

Briefing reporters on the country’s preparations for the 15th edition of the summit, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor told reporters on Monday that leaders of Brazil, China, India and host South Africa would take part in the discussions.
Johannesburg. The South African government has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the next ‘BRICS’ summit to be held here from August 22. Along with this, the South African government rejected the “rumors” in which it was said that Modi would not participate in the meeting of the group of five countries. The world’s five largest developing countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are included in BRICS. Together these countries represent 41 per cent of the global population, 24 per cent of global GDP and 16 per cent of global trade.

Pandor confirmed the presence of Prime Minister Modi, saying, “I spoke to various colleagues in the government and everyone is surprised by this rumor. I think someone is trying to create hurdles in our summit and he is the one who is fueling such rumours.
Pandor also said, “The Prime Minister of India never said that he would not attend the summit. I am in constant touch with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. He also never said so.” The Ministry of External Affairs had said in New Delhi last week that Prime Minister Modi would travel to Johannesburg to attend the BRICS summit. The ministry had informed that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa invited Prime Minister Modi for the BRICS Summit to be held in South Africa on 22-24 August 2023 and informed him about the preparations.
On August 3, after a telephonic conversation between the two leaders, the Ministry of External Affairs had said in a press release that the Prime Minister had accepted the invitation. The ministry had said that Modi was looking forward to his visit to Johannesburg to attend the summit. Pandor was asked whether Prime Minister Modi agreed to come after President Ramaphosa’s phone call. To this he said that Ramaphosa’s phone call to Modi to inform him about several matters was pre-decided. “The phone call was on our agenda. It has nothing to do with the rumor (of Modi) not being present.
