US Vice President Kamala Harris said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first state visit to the US will take bilateral ties to a higher level in space, defence, emerging technologies and supply chains. Modi has become the first leader to address a joint session of the US Congress twice. He had also addressed both the houses of the Congress (US Parliament) in 2016 before addressing it on Thursday. Harris’s office tweeted on Thursday, “The India-US partnership is stronger than ever.” Together, our countries will shape the future. We are working towards creating a more prosperous, safer and healthier world.

“The partnership between the US and India is one of the most important partnerships of the 21st century, and this visit will take our partnership to the next level, from space to defense, emerging technologies and supply chains,” he said. Harris thanked him for this statement. Harris was among the eminent personalities who were invited to a state dinner hosted in honor of Prime Minister Modi on Thursday at the White House, the official residence and office of the US President. Besides him, billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani and Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook also attended the dinner.

More than 400 distinguished guests were invited for the banquet hosted by US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at the White House Complex. Harris and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will host Modi for lunch on Friday. Addressing the US Parliament on Thursday, Modi said, “There are lakhs of people here who have their roots in India and some of them proudly sit here in this chamber.” One of them is sitting behind me, who has created history. He said this referring to Harris. Harris is the first female Vice President of America, the first African-American and the first ‘Asian-American’ Vice President. Harris’s mother Shyamala Gopalan was a resident of Chennai and a researcher who made significant contributions in the field of breast cancer.
