People are demanding democracy and freedom available to Kashmiris in India’s Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. The people of Pak Occupied Kashmir have made serious allegations against the Government of Pakistan for discriminating against them. The angry people here are now demanding to merge PoK with India.
A new wave of unrest broke out in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). In the last 24 hours, massive protests have been held in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir against the Pakistan Army and the Government of Pakistan. People are demanding democracy and freedom available to Kashmiris in India’s Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. The people of Pak Occupied Kashmir have made serious allegations against the Government of Pakistan for discriminating against them. The angry people here are now demanding to merge PoK with India.
Even two days ago, on August 3, thousands of people took to the streets in Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Mirpur, Dadial, Tatapani, Chaksawari, Khuirata and Nakayal, protesting against shortage of wheat, subsidy cuts, load shedding and ever-increasing cost of living, electricity bills Expressed his anger against the additional taxes. The protests were held in all the three divisions of Mirpur, Poonch and Muzaffarabad. An ultimatum was issued to the PoK government to roll back the additional taxes in two weeks or face a state-wide shutdown strike with a siege of the Vidhan Sabha building in PoK’s capital Muzaffarabad.
The protesters included people from all walks of life. Students, lawyers, transporters, pensioners, traders and various sections of civil society blocked roads, staged dharnas and organized rallies at every road intersection and town/city intersection in the above urban and semi-rural centres. This is not the first time that there has been a statewide protest against PoK. Only this time the public anger seems more coherent in the context of inter-state networking and coherent demands. However, it still lacks a political program that would channelize public anger towards a change in the legal status quo of PoK. Hence, every time previous protest movements have lost their momentum this has proved to be a mechanism to vent their frustration.
