Pope Francis congratulated the Russian Orthodox Church’s foreign envoy on Wednesday, just days after he revealed a secret “mission” to try to end the war in Ukraine. Metropolitan Anthony attended Francis’ weekly general audience in ‘St Peter’s Square’ and then greeted Francis at the end. He presented a statue to the Pope, which was blessed by Francis. Anthony is later seen being carried off the stage by an aide of Francis. In his remarks to the audience, Francis repeated an address he gave during his weekend trip to Hungary, during which he repeatedly called for an end to the war.

In Budapest he met with Metropolitan Hilarion, Anthony’s predecessor as Patriarch Kirill’s foreign envoy. Kirill is the head of the Russian Church who has strongly supported the Kremlin’s war and justified it on religious grounds. On his return from Hungary, he was asked at a press conference whether Hilarion and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who maintains relations with Russia, could play a mediating role in the war. Francis replied, “You can imagine that we didn’t only talk about ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ in this meeting, can’t you?” He reiterated his willingness to do whatever it takes to end the war.
