Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said on Thursday that he is announcing the dissolution of the country’s Parliament and early elections. President Sousa announced the dissolution of Parliament two days after Prime Minister Antonio Costa resigned following corruption allegations against the Portuguese government. Sousa said the elections would be held on March 10.
He made his decision public during a televised address to the nation after a meeting with the country’s Council of State. The Council of State is an advisory body of former politicians and celebrities.
Sousa had met with leaders of political parties in Parliament on Wednesday, after which he held a meeting with the Council of State. Socialist leader Costa has led Portugal since 2015 and won a historic election victory last year.
Police have carried out massive raids in Portugal as part of a corruption investigation that has shocked the country. After this Costa immediately resigned.
The police have arrested its chief of staff along with four other people and a government minister, whose name has not been disclosed yet. A few hours later, in his address to the nation, Costa reiterated his innocence and said that he could not continue in the post of Prime Minister.
