Moscow, 15 February (HS). Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed on Wednesday that Russian scientists are close to creating a cancer vaccine. Putin claimed that scientists will soon make it available to patients. Putin said that we have come very close to the creation of cancer vaccines and new generation immune system strengthening drugs.
Putin expressed hope that they would soon be used effectively as medicine. He said these things at an event organized on future technologies in Moscow. Putin did not specify which types of cancer the proposed vaccine would target, nor did he explain how it would work. Many countries and companies are working on cancer vaccines.
Last year the British government signed a deal with Germany-based BioNTech to begin trials to provide cancer treatments. The aim of which is to reach 10,000 patients by 2030. Pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck & Co. are developing an experimental cancer vaccine that halves the chance of death from melanoma (the deadliest skin cancer) after three years of treatment in a mid-stage study.
According to the World Health Organization, there are currently six licensed vaccines to treat human papillomaviruses (HPVs) that cause several cancers, including cervical cancer. There are also vaccines against hepatitis B (HBs), which causes liver cancer.
