Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Wednesday evening for an important meeting with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to further strengthen the historically close and friendly relations between India and Qatar. This is Modi’s second visit to Qatar as Prime Minister since 2014.
Modi arrived in Doha after a two-day visit to the UAE, where he addressed the ‘World Government Summit’, an event of the Indian diaspora and also inaugurated the UAE’s first Hindu temple.
Before leaving New Delhi on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi said in a statement that he was looking forward to meeting Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, “under whose leadership Qatar is witnessing tremendous development and transformation.”
Ahead of India’s announcement on Monday of Modi’s visit to Qatar, Qatar released eight jailed former Indian Navy personnel and seven of them returned home.
In his pre-departure statement, Modi also said the presence of over 8,00,000 Indians in Qatar is “a testament to the strong ties between our people.” Apart from talks with the Amir, Modi is also scheduled to meet other dignitaries in Qatar.
