The International Convention on Marine Protected Areas (IMPAC) is an important convention in world maritime governance. The 5th IMPAC will be held in Vancouver, Canada from February 3 to 9. During the conference, discussions will be held on marine conservation and protection of marine natural and cultural heritage. The achievements made in the conference will prove beneficial for realizing the goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development. The first four IMPACs were all successful, held in 2005 in Geelong, Australia, 2009 in Washington, USA, 2013 in Marseille, France and 2017 in La Serena, Chile.
Establishment of Marine Conservation Area is the most effective way to protect species and ecosystems of animals and manage fisheries. According to statistics, in the year 2000, the area of marine protected areas around the world was about two million square kilometers, which was less than one percent of the total area of the ocean. But over the past 20 years, the area of marine protected areas in the world has continued to grow by an average of 70 percent per year. Now there are about 18 thousand marine protected areas in the world. These are very important for protecting marine ecosystems and improving their resilience to climate change.
China pays great attention to the protection of marine ecology. So far, China has established more than 250 marine protected areas, covering an area of more than 12 million hectares. Recorded 28,661 species of sea creatures in China, ranking third in the world. The ocean is the largest ecological system in the world and also the life support system of the Earth. The health of the ocean concerns all nations. Efforts of all countries are needed to protect it. Countries have agreed to prioritize marine conservation.
