Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided not to contest as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman in the upcoming intra-party elections and has chosen his close aide Barrister Gauhar Khan for the post. Senior PTI leader Barrister Ali Zafar announced his intention to contest the elections in his place on Wednesday. According to Dawn report, Zafar said that Imran does not want to give any excuse to the Election Commission of Pakistan for not giving the ‘bat’ election symbol for the upcoming general elections, rejecting the nominations of candidates or not participating in the elections.

The statement comes a day after the confusion that PTI created when it refuted the statement of one of its leaders who claimed that Imran will not contest for the post of president in the upcoming elections. Zafar claimed that Imran had refused to contest for the post until the Toshakhana corruption case, in which the current PTI chief was convicted, was legally resolved. Zafar said that Imran’s sentence has been suspended, but the final decision has not been taken yet. Zafar described Gohar’s nomination for PTI chairman as a suitable option for a “temporary arrangement” and said Imran would contest the intra-party elections until the Toshakhana case is decided.

Gohar was chosen as the ‘Acting President’ as all other prominent party leaders were appointed to permanent posts. Meanwhile, Gohar responded by saying that Imran Khan will remain the president of the party. Thanking cricketer-turned-politician Khan, he said, “Khan saab was, is and will be the chairman… I will carry out my responsibility till Khan returns.” He added, “With his nomination, you will realize that this There is no minus-one formula, this is not a coup. He is Imran Khan’s own nominee and is suitable for the temporary arrangement we are making.”
