Moscow : Russian President Vladimir Putin justified his country’s recent decision to suspend participation in the ‘New START’ (New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) treaty in an interview aired on Sunday, saying that Russia has the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ) has no other option but to look into nuclear capabilities. Putin reiterated that Russia’s existence is at risk because, according to him, NATO members want to see the country’s “strategic defeat”.

He told Russian state TV that the decision to suspend New Start’s participation was due to the need to “ensure security, strategic stability” for Russia. Putin said, ‘When all the major NATO countries have declared our strategic defeat as their main goal, how can we ignore their nuclear capabilities under these circumstances?’

Putin’s announcement will increase concern

Putin announced on Tuesday that Russia was suspending its participation in the ‘New Start’ treaty that aims to curb the spread of nuclear weapons. The treaty is Russia’s last remaining nuclear arms control agreement with the United States. Putin also announced that he would not change his strategy regarding the war in Ukraine. This announcement is expected to increase the tension between Western countries and Russia.

What was the ‘New Start’ treaty?

The ‘New START’ treaty was signed by Russia and the US in 2010. The treaty limits the number of long-range nuclear weapons that can be deployed by both countries and also limits the use of missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. In an interview aired on Sunday, Putin alleged that NATO had joined the Ukraine war. He said that the aim of Western countries is to ‘break’ Russia.
