The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. A day before Zelensky’s visit, Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the Kremlin. However, Zelensky denied Russia’s claim of an attack on the Kremlin. Russia claimed that it had foiled a drone attack on the Kremlin by Ukraine in the early hours of Wednesday. Ukraine’s president denied Russia’s claim, saying, “We did not attack Putin or Russia.” We have left the matter to the ICC.
Russia also claimed that Ukraine’s failed attempt to assassinate President Putin was a “terrorist” act. On the other hand, Putin’s spokesman alleged on Thursday that America was behind the alleged attack. “The Kremlin is well aware that decisions on such actions and terrorist attacks are not made in Kiev, but in Washington,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov alleged during the press conference.
ICC judges announced last month that they have “reasonable grounds to believe” that Putin and the Russian Commissioner for the Rights of the Child are responsible for the illegal transfer of children from Ukraine’s occupied territories to Russia. It is believed that there is little chance of a trial against Putin in The Hague. The court does not have a police force to enforce its warrants and Russia’s president is unlikely to travel to any of the 123 ICC member states, which under ICC rules can arrest him if they so desire.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military claimed that three Russian drones targeted the city of Odesa on Thursday. The military also claimed that there were three attempted airstrikes on Kiev in the past four days. The Ukrainian Air Force destroyed 18 out of a total of 24 drones sent by the Russian military to various regions. No casualties have been reported in the drone strikes.
