Cough syrup exporters will be required to get their products tested in prescribed government laboratories before sending them abroad from June 1. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification issued on Monday that export of cough syrup will be allowed only after the sample of the exported product is tested in the laboratory. Cough syrups worth $17 billion were exported from India in the financial year 2021-22 and this amount increased to $17.6 billion in 2022-23. To ensure the quality of medical products exported from India, the central government has decided to test the quality of cough syrup before exports, an official said. This test can be done in Indian Drug Code Commission, Regional Drug Testing Laboratories, and NABL accredited drug testing laboratories.
