India and China have exchanged cultures for more than 2,000 years, since ancient times. Monks from India like Bodhidharma, Kumarajiva often visited China, while Chinese monks like Hiuen Tsang, Fa-hien and Yiching traveled to India to collect Buddhist scriptures. At the same time, in modern times, the prominent Indian poet, writer and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore played an important role in the cultural exchange between India and China. Undoubtedly, he greatly admired China, which is evident from his writings, in which he discussed this country in detail.
When Tagore visited China in the year 1924, he showed great love and friendship towards the Chinese people. Wherever he went, he talked about the long history of friendship between India and China. The purpose of his visit was to re-establish cultural and spiritual ties between India and China, emphasizing mutual understanding and exchange of knowledge. Tagore’s visit to China revealed his deep admiration for the country and his desire to promote intellectual relations between the two countries.
He thought that his visit would bring the people of both countries closer spiritually. He wanted both Indians and Chinese to pay more attention to spiritual values rather than the material values of the West. Tagore’s visit to China in 1924 was like a dream come true. Then, in 1937, he started the China College at Visva Bharati in India. China College, built after Tagore’s visit to China, is a symbol of cultural exchange between India and China.
As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Tagore’s visit to China, it is clear that China will continue to learn about him in different ways. Tagore’s thoughts and writings will continue to shape the relationship between India and China in the future. Their thoughts about their relationship can guide them to trust each other more, become better friends, and do more together.
