During a visit to Stanford University in the US, Rahul Gandhi said, ‘I don’t think when I entered politics in 2004, I never thought what is happening in the country today. I am the first person to get maximum punishment for defamation. I never thought that something like this was possible. In March, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as an MP from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in compliance with the Surat trial court’s order. The court convicted him in a criminal defamation case and sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment. He has got bail in the case.
‘Going to Parliament gave a big opportunity’
Rahul Gandhi said at Stanford that his dismissal as an MP gave him a ‘bigger opportunity’ than sitting in Parliament. Here he mentioned about ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. Rahul said, ‘The opposition in India is struggling. BJP has captured the institutions. We are fighting in a democratic way. When we saw that no organization was helping us, we came out on the streets and thus the Bharat Jodo Yatra happened.
‘I am not asking anyone for help’
Rahul Gandhi was asked whether he was seeking foreign help to deal with domestic challenges. He refused and said, ‘I am not seeking support from anyone. I know our fight is our fight. But yes, there are young students from India here and I want to interact with them and it is my right to do so. He said that PM Modi should also talk to the people and “answer some tough questions”.
