Kathmandu: Ramshay Yadav, the leader of Nepal’s Madhes region, may become the third Vice President of the country on Friday. The voting for the post of Vice President is on Friday in which MPs will participate. Leaders in the race for the post include Janata Samajwadi Party’s Ramshay Yadav, CPN-UML’s Aastha Lakshmi Shakya, Janmat Party’s Pramila Yadav and Mamta Jha. The ruling coalition’s efforts to field a common candidate failed at the last minute. The meeting of political parties held at the official residence of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda here on Wednesday to evolve a consensus on the candidate for the post of Vice President remained inconclusive.
Madhes region leader Ramshay Yadav is expected to become the new Vice President. He is supported by seven parties, including the three main parties Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center and CPN-Unified Socialist. Most of the people of the Madhesi community living in the southern Terai region of Nepal are of Indian origin. Meanwhile, Pramila Yadav has supported her party’s candidate Ramsahai (52), announcing the withdrawal of her candidature. The Election Commission released the final list of candidates on Sunday, but Pramila’s candidature could not be officially withdrawn despite Pramila announcing her withdrawal.
“All preparations have been completed for Friday’s polling,” Election Commission spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel was quoted as saying in the news. Voting is underway at the Lhotse Hall in the federal parliament building. Separate polling stations have been set up for members of the federal parliament and provincial assemblies. Assistant Returning Officer Amrita Kumari Sharma told the “MyRepublica” website that the counting of votes would be done shortly after the polling. This is the third election for the post of Vice President since Nepal adopted the federal democratic republic system in the year 2008. The term of the Vice President is five years.
