The United Nations said it is preparing to leave the country in May with a “heavy heart” if it cannot persuade the Taliban administration to allow local women to work for the UN development programme. This was stated by the head of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) A. Steiner said UN officials are in talks with the Islamic government in the hope that it will include an exception in an ordinance issued this month to allow local women to work for the organization.
“It’s fair to say that where we are right now, the entire UN system has to take a step back and re-evaluate its ability to operate,” Steiner said. Steiner said the Taliban has allowed Afghan women to do some work and a UN report released on Tuesday said the country needs to do more. There is a dire need of working women as its economy is not on track.
One report said that there were some very modest signs of economic recovery after the Taliban came to power. It says, “There has been some increase in exports. There is some stability in exchange rates and low inflation. But GDP, the sum of all goods and services produced inside Afghanistan’s borders, is expected to lag behind population growth. This means that per capita income will decrease from $359 in 2022 to $345 in 2024. It is noteworthy that the Taliban has allowed women to work in health, education and some small businesses under certain conditions.
