Canberra (Best Hindu News): The remains of three US Marines who died in a helicopter crash have been recovered from an island off the northern coast of Australia. US Marine Rotational Force Darwin (MRF-D) said in a statement on Wednesday.
The MRF-D statement said the remains have been moved to Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory (NT), Xinhua news agency reported.
Corporal Spencer R. Colart (21), Capt. Eleanor V. LeBeau (29) and Major Tobin J.J. Lewis (37) was among 23 marines on board the MV-22B Osprey when it crashed off Melville Island around 9.30am on Sunday during a training exercise.
Collart was the Osprey crew chief, Labeau was the pilot and Lewis was the executive officer of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 363 (VMM-363), his unit said Monday.
The MRF-D said that, as of Tuesday night, two of the marines injured in the accident remained in a stable condition at the Royal Darwin Hospital, but the condition of the third was critical, Xinhua news agency reported.
“The cause of the incident is being investigated,” the statement said.
According to Northern Territory Police Commissioner Michael Murphy, the crashed helicopter was one of two US Marine Osprey planes that took off from Darwin on Sunday morning and flew towards the Tiwi Islands, about 80 km away.
The crash comes just a month after four Australian military aircrew members were killed when an MRH-90 Taipan helicopter crashed into the sea during an exercise near Hamilton Island off Australia’s east coast, part of a joint exercise with the US. Were.
