Moscow. The head of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said Friday that the country has deployed an advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that President Vladimir Putin said would make Moscow’s enemies think twice. Russia’s news agencies quoted Roscosmos chief Yuri Borisov as saying in published reports that the Sarmat missile has been deployed on combat duty.
No other details regarding the missile deployment have been given in the reports. The Sarmat is an ICBM among various advanced weapons, the construction of which was announced by Putin in the year 2018. The silo-based missile is capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads and is likely to replace the R-26 ICBM, nicknamed Satan by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Sarmat’s initial launch phase is reportedly of short duration, giving surveillance systems little time to detect it. About two months after Russia sent troops to Ukraine in 2022, Putin said Sarmat would reliably protect Russia from external threats. It will make those people who try to threaten our country through aggressive rhetoric to think twice.
