Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday declared two US diplomats “persona non grata” over their involvement in “illegal activities” and ordered them to leave the country within seven days.
First Secretary of the US Embassy in Russia Jeffrey Silin and Second Secretary Devin Bernstein “remained in contact” with the former US Embassy employee in Vladivostok who was arrested earlier this year, the ministry alleged in a statement.
The former employee is accused of gathering information for US diplomats about Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and related issues. US Ambassador to Russia Lynn Tracy was summoned on Thursday and informed of the expulsion of Silin and Bernstein, according to the statement.
The US Embassy in Moscow said in a statement that the US government would respond “appropriately”. Meanwhile, Slovakia said on Thursday it was expelling a diplomat from the Russian embassy in the country’s capital Bratislava for violating international treaties.
He did not provide any information about the alleged violation. Slovakia’s Foreign Ministry said the diplomat had been ordered to leave the country within 48 hours.
