Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hosted talks with his counterparts from Turkey, Syria and Iran on Wednesday. It was the highest-level meeting between Turkey and Syria since the start of the civil war in Syria nearly a decade ago. In his opening remarks, Lavrov expressed hope that the meeting would pave the way for the development of a strategy for the normalization of Turkey-Syria relations. He said that in his view Russia’s task is not only to consolidate the progress made politically, but also to set general guidelines for the further process.
Russia has long sought to help Syrian President Bashar Assad improve Syria’s relations with Turkey and other war-torn countries. Russia, along with Iran, launched a military intervention in Syria in September 2015 to help Assad’s government regain control of much of the country. Russia has maintained its military presence in the Middle East country, although large numbers of its troops are involved in fighting with Ukraine.
Syrian state media quoted Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad as saying that despite all the negativity in previous years, Syria saw the talks as “an opportunity for both governments to cooperate with the help and support of our friends Russia and Iran.” Mekdad said the main goal of the Syrian government is to remove all illegal military presence in the country, including Turkish forces.
