Was banned because of insects
A statement in this regard was issued on Friday by the Food Ministry of Pakistan. In this statement, the ministry said that this export is a major success in promoting the overall economy of the country. Russia had banned rice coming from Pakistan after insects were detected in rice. In the year 2021, this ban was lifted from Russia. But at that time only four mills were approved. These were the companies that met the quality standards. DPP in association with Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) has taken special steps to upgrade 15 more mills as per Russian guidelines under sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) requirements for export of rice.
Farmers will be benefited
It is said that after improving the quality and quantity of rice, several attempts have been made to bring these companies in line with the SPS requirements for exporting rice. Now 19 rice companies can export rice to Russia. The move is good news for rice farmers, especially in Punjab and Sindh. The main source of income of the farmers in these parts is based on these exports. Moreover, Pakistan being an agricultural economy can expect to increase exports to other places by improving quality standards as per global markets.
Now look at other markets
Market experts of Pakistan say that this agreement will also open the door for more export of rice in international markets. Pakistan is trying to export quality rice to Asia, Europe, America and Australia as well. Pakistan’s basmati exports have fallen to 541,492 tonnes in 2023 fiscal from 695,564 tonnes in the previous fiscal. In the year 2022, it had received $ 1.6 billion from the export of rice. While this year i.e. in 2023, he has to be content with only $1.4 billion.
