Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he is ready to use nuclear weapons if there is any threat to the country’s sovereignty or independence. In an interview with Russia’s state television channel Putin said he hoped the US would avoid any escalation that could lead to a nuclear war, but he stressed that Russia’s nuclear forces were prepared for it.
Asked whether he had ever considered using nuclear weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine, Putin replied that there had been no need.
He also expressed confidence that Moscow will achieve its goals in Ukraine and said the door was open to negotiations, stressing that any agreement would require firm guarantees from the West.
