Russia says it will supply S-400 missile air defense systems to India on schedule

Moscow: India and Russia have been partners for the last nearly seven decades. There were many incidents like the war in Ukraine which tested the friendship between the two countries but it remained friendly. It is an example of this friendship that Russia will keep its one more promise. It has been said from the Russian side that the delivery of the S-400 air defense system and its associated equipment to India will be on schedule only. The Interfax news agency quoted a senior Russian defense officer as saying this. This was announced in a program organized by the Service for Military-Technical Cooperation.

production on time
India is the world’s largest arms importer and still uses mostly Russian technology for conventional weapons. Interfax quoted Dmitry Shugaev, head of the Military Technical Co-operation, as saying that the production of the S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft missile system is going on as per schedule. “The delivery of the S-400 Triumf system equipment is expected to be completed within the agreed time frame,” he said in remarks during an event of the armed forces.

The deal was done in the year 2018

In 2018, India signed a deal for S-400 Triumf air defense system units for $5.4 billion. India has so far received three systems while two are awaited. It has been told by Interfax that the deliveries will be completed by the end of 2024. The Indian Air Force had said in March this year that the Ukraine war was delaying critical defense supplies from Russia.

India had received the third squadron of S-400 air defense systems from Russia. This unit was deployed along the border with Pakistan in Punjab and Rajasthan. Now the new squadron can be deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. India has to deal with two enemies on two fronts in the form of China and Pakistan. In such a situation, the timely delivery of S-400 will be a big challenge for China-Pakistan.

Russia has contributed the most
India, in recent years, has been looking to diversify imports or replace them with domestically manufactured hardware. Apart from the French fighter jet Rafale, India has also signed drones and American jet engines from Israel. According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), since 2017, India has spent $18.3 billion on arms imports. Of this, Russia’s contribution is still $8.5 billion.
