Moscow: In the midst of the ongoing war with Ukraine, Russia has taken a big decision. Russia has decided that it will make its most dangerous nuclear submarine even more deadly. Russia’s 885A Yasen class submarines will be equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles. Russia will carry out this mission under one of the most advanced projects. The project is being described as a symbol of massive progress in the country’s naval technology and capabilities. This information was given by the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) of Russia to the news agency RIA Novosti.

USC Director General Alexei Rakhmanov has said that the Yasen-type submarines in Project 885(M) will be equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles. Yassen are nuclear-powered submarines and are said to be very powerful. Rakhmanov has said that efforts are already underway in this direction. The Yasen class nuclear submarines are already armed with the Physik type torpedoes as well as the Kalibr and Onyx cruise missiles.

After being equipped with Zircon missiles, these submarines will become more dangerous. Rakhmanov has said, ‘This project is being taken forward after the decision of the Ministry of Defense. No fixed date has been given as to when the project will be completed. By the year 2026, these submarines equipped with Zircon missiles can join the Russian Navy.

He informed that the first Russian ship equipped with Zircon missiles was the frigate Admiral Gorshkov. This frigate was a part of Project 22350. This hypersonic missile system will be fitted in several phases. Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear-powered submarines are an advanced version of Project 885. Equipped with ‘Caliber’ and ‘Onyx’ cruise missiles, these submarines, also known as ‘Ash’, are considered the best examples of advanced naval technology. Currently, the Russian Navy has two submarines of the 885 Project and 885M series. While additional six advanced submarines are also being prepared.

Why were these submarines made

The Yasen class submarines are designed to respond to carrier battle groups, neutralize ballistic missile submarines and attack submarines. These submarines are also known by the NATO reporting name Severodvinsk. Apart from this, the submarine of Yasen-M version has also proved its strength. These submarines can easily target the naval bases and ports of the enemy country. Experts believe that with such hypersonic missile-firing capabilities, Russian submarines will prove to be a major threat to the US Navy.
