Dozens of Russian and Ukrainian prisoners of war returned home after the prisoner exchange. Officials of both sides gave this information on Saturday. Andrey Yermak, a top aide to the Ukrainian president, said on social media that 116 Ukrainian prisoners had been released. He said the released prisoners of war included soldiers who had held out in Mariupol during the months-long siege of Moscow. Also included are guerrilla fighters from the Kherson region and soldiers captured during fierce fighting in the eastern city of Bakhmut.
Meanwhile, Russian defense officials announced that 63 Russian servicemen, including some “special category” prisoners, had returned from Ukraine after the exchange. Russia said the release of the “special category” prisoners was done after mediation by the United Arab Emirates. However, the statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry on Saturday did not share details about these ‘special category’ detainees.
