Kyiv : The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is deploying teams of experts to all four of Ukraine’s nuclear plants to avoid major accidents amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The head of the agency, Rafael Grossi, gave this information. The UN-affiliated IAEA already has experts at the Zaporozhye nuclear plant in Ukraine, which is currently under Russian forces’ control. It is the largest nuclear plant in Europe.
At least 11 specialists are being permanently stationed at all plants in Ukraine. This is the biggest deployment of this agency so far. IAEA technical staff will also be in Chernobyl. This plant has been closed since the horrific nuclear disaster in 1986. Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denis Schmihal said on Wednesday at a joint press conference with Grossi, “From tomorrow all nuclear plants in Ukraine will have two flags, one of Ukraine and the other of the nuclear agency.” Grossi arrived in Ukraine this week to raise the IAEA flag and deploy staff at each nuclear facility. He went to Chernobyl on Wednesday and Rivne on Tuesday. He said that the employees would stay at the establishment as long as the Ukrainian government wanted.
