‘This is not a time of war’
In the joint statement of the Quad, PM Modi’s remarks have been specifically reiterated which he made in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In his bilateral meeting with President Putin, PM Modi had told him that this is not the era of war. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Summit (SCO) held in Samarkand. Quad’s statement said, ‘ We believe that our era should not be one of war, we are committed to dialogue and diplomacy. We support a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace within the framework of the United Nations Charter. That is why we agree that the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons will be taken seriously and will never be accepted. Apart from climate change, the leaders of the Quad discussed many other issues ranging from increasing connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region.
PM Modi’s big statement in Samarkand
Putin and Modi met for the first time at the SCO summit in Samarkand. The two leaders sat down for talks for the first time since the outbreak of war with Ukraine in February 2024. During this, PM Modi told Putin that the ‘era of war’ is over. PM Modi’s remarks at the SCO summit in Samarkand publicly indicated India’s concern over Russia’s war on Ukraine. But India has not yet criticized Russia on the war. Modi had said in the meeting with Putin, ‘I know that today’s era is not of war. We have discussed this issue with you many times on phone that democracy, diplomacy and dialogue can solve the issues of the whole world.
condemnation of terrorism
The 26/11 attacks have also been mentioned in the Quad’s joint statement. The Quad also condemned cross-border terrorism, the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai as well as the Pathankot terror attack. The Quad’s joint statement said, “We are committed to working together to promote accountability for the perpetrators of such terrorist attacks.” We condemn the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai and Pathankot and reiterate our commitment to move forward.
