Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, is either dead or in prison after a failed coup against Russian President Vladimir Putin, a former US military officer has claimed. The statement came after Russia claimed that President Vladimir Putin met with the head of the mercenary group five days after the uprising. Former US general Robert Abrams told ABC News that the meeting was also possibly a sham.
Abrams said that my personal assessment is that I doubt we will ever see Prigozhin in public again. I imagine he’ll either go into hiding, or go to jail, or be dealt with in some other way, but I doubt we’ll ever see him again. When asked whether he believed Prigozhin was still alive, General Abrams said, “I personally don’t think he is alive and if he is, he is in prison somewhere.
Earlier this week Russia said Prigozhin and his men met with Vladimir Putin and pledged loyalty to the government five days after the armed uprising. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the three-hour meeting took place on 29 June and included not only Prigozhin but the commander of his Wagner Group military contractor. Vladimir Putin, he said, appraised Wagner’s actions on the battlefield in Ukraine – where mercenaries have fought alongside Russian troops.
