The head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service said Tuesday that opposition leader Alexei Navalny died of natural causes. This statement of the intelligence chief is being seen as an attempt to calm the questions being raised at the international level after the death of Navalny, a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin.
Sergei Naryshkin, director of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Russia’s top intelligence agency, known as ‘SVR’, said in an interview broadcast on Russian state television. He said, “Sometimes life has to end… Navalny died of natural causes.
Navalny (47) died on February 16 in ‘Penal Colony No. 3’ of Kharp city. He was sentenced to 19 years imprisonment for terrorism. Although Russian authorities have not yet made any announcement about the cause of Navalny’s death, many Western leaders have accused Putin. Navalny’s mother had to wait eight days to get her son’s body.
The authorities delayed handing over the body citing postmortem, due to which the mother, who was going through the pain of her son’s death, had to release a video and appeal to Putin to hand over her son’s body so that she could perform the last rites of her son with dignity. Navnali’s last rites were performed on Friday in which thousands of people attended. During this period a large number of police forces were deployed.
