Tokyo. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Akie Abe, wife of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on Friday and recalled the late Prime Minister’s invaluable contribution in taking forward India-Japan relations. Abe (67) was shot dead on July 8, 2022, during an election campaign in Nara, Japan. Jaishankar said in a post on ‘X’, “This time during his visit to Tokyo, met Aki Abe, wife of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Remembered the invaluable contribution of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in taking forward India-Japan relations.

He said, “Handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing condolences on the recent demise of the late Prime Minister’s mother Yoko Abe.” Shinzo Abe was the longest serving Prime Minister of Japan. He held the post of Prime Minister of the country from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. In a letter after Abe’s death in 2022, Prime Minister Modi had described him as an excellent leader of Japan. Modi had said that in Abe’s demise, Japan and the world have lost a great visionary leader and a dear friend.
