National Handloom Day is celebrated every year on 7th August in honor of the handloom-weaving community of India. The day highlights the contribution of this community in the socio-economic development of the country.
A first of its kind ‘Saree Walkathon’ is planned to be organized to encourage the art of Indian Weavers. The walkathon will be held in central London. It will start from Trafalgar Square and conclude at Parliament Square on August 6, a day before the National Handloom Day in India. Around 500 women dressed in different colors of saris will represent different states of India in the walkathon. They are expected to pass through most of the famous landmarks of the UK capital. The British Women in Sarees group is organizing this walkathon in association with Inspiring Indian Women (IIW).
Dr. Deepti Jain, British Women in Sarees Group, said, “The modern Indian woman believes in stepping out of her walls to see the world and she does a lot in the saree, redefining the power of the garment.” Jain said, “British Women in Sarees is a group of women who take pride in showcasing handloom sarees and representing India’s unique cultural heritage. It is a non-profit organization that likes to organize events to promote our national heritage and make everyone across the globe aware of the labour, handcraftsmanship and artistry behind weaving these exquisite sarees.
The group organized a colorful sari event for Women’s Day last June during the Royal Ascot horse races in Berkshire, England, which saw hundreds of women from the Indian subcontinent dressed in colorful saris and traditional British hats. National Handloom Day is celebrated every year on 7th August in honor of the handloom-weaving community of India. The day highlights the contribution of this community in the socio-economic development of the country.
