Saudi Arabia has surprised India with its stand on the Jammu and Kashmir issue in the meeting organized by the global Muslim body OIC on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said that he stands with the Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir in maintaining their Islamic identity and their dignity. He said that the Jammu and Kashmir issue is one of the major challenges facing the security and stability of the region. He warned that leaving the issue unresolved would contribute to regional instability.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, including those suffering in the region due to the ongoing conflict and unrest, at a meeting of the Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir organized by the Islamic Organization. Cooperation (OIC) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. The minister said the Kingdom is engaged in mediation efforts between the parties concerned to prevent any escalation of conflict in the region and achieve a peaceful resolution in accordance with international resolutions.

The world-famous mountainous region, known for its natural beauty, has been fraught with conflict since the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, when British rulers divided the Indian subcontinent. In 1989 Kashmiri separatists launched an armed insurgency demanding unification with Pakistan or complete independence from India. This resulted in a crackdown by New Delhi on extremist militant insurgency and public protests against Indian rule in the region. New Delhi insists that terrorists in Kashmir are part of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, a charge Pakistan denies.
