Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Sunday declared Awami League Advisory Council member and party nominee Chuppu elected unopposed as Bangladesh’s president after scrutiny of their nomination papers, reported UNB news agency.
Former judge and freedom fighter Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu has been elected unopposed as the 22nd President of the country. The Chief Election Commission of Bangladesh gave this information on Monday. Seventy-four-year-old Chuppu will replace President Mohammad Abdul Hamid. The news said that a gazette on the appointment of the new President of Bangladesh was issued by the Chief Election Commissioner on Monday. The term of Hamid, Bangladesh’s longest-serving president, will end on April 23 and according to the constitution he cannot seek a third term. Hamid, a senior Awami League leader and a seven-time lawmaker, was elected the President of Bangladesh in the last two elections.
He was sworn in for his second term on 24 April 2018. The president’s press secretary told UNB that Hamid greeted the newly elected president over the phone and wished him success on Monday. After his retirement from the post of District and Sessions Judge, Chuppu served as one of the commissioners of the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission. He later joined politics and became a member of the Awami League Advisory Council, which comprises senior party leaders and technocrats. However, Chuppu has to leave the party post to become the head of the nation.
