A resolution has been introduced in the US House of Representatives urging Pakistan to maintain democratic institutions, human rights and the rule of law as the cash-strapped country prepares for general elections in February. The resolution introduced in the House of Representatives this week by Congressman Mitch McCormick and Congressman Dan Kildee reaffirmed their strong support for democracy in Pakistan, including free and fair elections that reflect the will of the people of Pakistan. It also called on the President and the Secretary of State to work with the Government of Pakistan to uphold democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
America calls on Pakistan to respect press freedom
The resolution sent to the House Foreign Affairs Committee “calls on the Government of Pakistan to protect democratic institutions, Freedom of expression of the people of Pakistan, and Urges to uphold human rights and the rule of law and to respect the fundamental guarantees of due process, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly.”
It condemns efforts to suppress the participation of the people of Pakistan in their democracy, including through harassment, intimidation, arbitrary detention, or violation of their human, civil, or political rights; And condemns any attempt to subvert Pakistan’s political, electoral or judicial processes.
This proposal has come at a time when Pakistan, which is facing political and economic instability, is preparing to hold general elections on February 8.
