Mumbai : The rupee gained 19 paise against the US dollar in early trade on Monday to breach the 80 mark for the first time in two months due to weakness in the US dollar overseas. Forex traders said easing crude oil prices and profit booking in domestic equity markets also supported the domestic currency.
The rupee opened at 80.92 against the US dollar at the interbank forex market. Its previous closing price was 81.17. It was trading in the range of 81.02 to 80.88 in early deals. The rupee was trading at 80.98 per dollar on Monday morning, showing a gain of 19 paise over its previous closing price.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the US dollar’s position against a basket of six major currencies, declined 0.35 per cent to 101.65. Global oil index Brent crude futures were down 0.52 per cent at $87.17 a barrel.
