Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has won an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary elections of Bangladesh. His party Awami League has won for the fourth consecutive time. The media has given this news quoting an election official. Following a violence-filled election campaign and a boycott by the main opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), it has been confirmed that Hasina’s party has won 216 out of 299 seats, according to multiple media reports. The official said, ‘The ruling Awami League party has won more than 50 percent of the seats.’ According to the report, the Election Commission is expected to make a final official announcement on the voting results late on Monday night.
According to Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Habibul Awal, about 40 percent of the total eligible 120 million people voted. According to local TV stations, independent candidates won 52 seats, while the country’s third-largest ethnic party won 11 seats. Hasina’s party has crossed the majority mark and the counting is still going on. This will be his fifth term as Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Hasina’s government arrested thousands of rival politicians before the elections. The opposition BNP, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, boycotted the elections.
According to reports, 78-year-old Zia is under house arrest after being convicted in a corruption case. Meanwhile Prime Minister Hasina was re-elected to Parliament from Gopalganj-3 constituency. According to a report, Hasina got 249,965 votes, while her nearest rival Bangladesh Supreme Party’s M. Nizam Uddin Lashkar got just 469 votes. Hasina has reached Parliament from Gopalganj-3 seat for the eighth time since 1986. This victory also means that 76-year-old Hasina has become the longest-ruling leader in the country.
According to reports, the BNP led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia refused to accept the election results. At least 18 arson incidents took place in the run-up to the elections, including one on a train on Friday night that claimed four lives. Seven people associated with the BNP and its youth wing were arrested for their alleged involvement in the train attack. Sheikh Hasina’s government defended the election, saying that 27 parties and 404 independent candidates participated in it.
