islamabad (Uttam Hindu News): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has stripped Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of its iconic ‘bat’ election symbol, which reflects the former cricket career of its founder Imran Khan. Announcing its decision, a five-member ECP bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja declared PTI’s intra-party elections “illegal”.
The 11-page order was given on the petition of former PTI member Akbar S Babar, who claimed that PTI had not conducted the elections as per the rules. According to Geo News report, this is a big blow for the former ruling party, as elections are to be held on February 8. Party founder Imran Khan has already been behind bars for months and his release does not seem to be coming anytime soon.
PTI has not complied with our instructions and has failed to conduct inter-party elections in accordance with the prevailing Constitution, 2019 and the Election Act, 2017 and Election Rules, 2017, the order said. With the elections declared illegal, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who had replaced Khan as party president, is no longer the top party chief, Geo News reported.
