One person was killed and at least two were injured in shooting on Monday near the site of a pro-democracy protest in Guatemala. Local authorities gave this information.
Victor Gomez, a spokesman for volunteer firefighters in Malacatán, near the border with Mexico, said it was not clear whether those killed in the shooting were protesters or not. This is the third week of demonstrations against Attorney General Consuelo Porras.
Protesters have accused the attorney general of undemocratically challenging Bernardo Arévalo, the progressive candidate who recently won the presidential election. Arévalo will assume the presidency in January.
Various videos of Malakatan being shared on social media show a chaotic situation. In some videos, gunfire is heard and a vehicle and a police patrol vehicle are seen burning. It is not yet clear who opened fire.
Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei said authorities were “investigating.” He promised to provide more details in due course. The National Police later reported arresting 11 people.
The Home Department said in a statement that it searched the vehicles involved in the attack and found three injured people, but made no mention of any deaths.
