A 19-year-old Sikh was attacked and injured in New York for wearing a turban while traveling on a bus in a suspected hate crime, police said. The attack occurred on Sunday while the Sikh teen was riding a shuttle bus in Queens, CBS News Channel reported. The suspect approached the victim and asked him to take off his turban and said that we don’t wear it in this country and take off the mask. Police said the attacker then punched the teenager on his face, back and back of his head, causing minor injuries.
The report said he also tried to remove the turban from the victim’s head before getting off the bus and leaving. Police described the suspect as a male, 25-35 years old, dark complexion, slim build, approximately 5’9 tall, with brown eyes and black hair. It was reported that the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Unit is investigating the incident and has called the incident a hate crime attack. It said no arrests have been made in the case yet. Community activist Japneet Singh told ABC7 television station that at the moment, the victim is in great shock. He further said that the family is very scared for him.
The Sikh Coalition, an organization representing the community, said in a post on Twitter (formerly Twitter) that we are in contact with the survivor and are working with her to provide assistance as needed; He has requested to remain anonymous for now. Our current understanding is that the NYPD is, appropriately, investigating this incident as a hate crime.
