Singapore: Voting is being held in Singapore on Friday to elect the country’s ninth president. Indian-origin former minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam is also trying his luck in a triangular contest. Voters eligible to vote were seen queuing up outside the polling booth at 8 am. More than 27 lakh people are eligible to vote here. Polling stations will remain open till 8 pm. After this the counting of votes will start and the results will come by midnight. Apart from Thurman, there are two other candidates in the race for the country’s ninth president.

Among these, former Chief Investment Officer of Singapore Government Investment Corp (GIC) N. Kok Song Hai and Tan Kin Lian, former head of state-owned insurance conglomerate NTUC Income. The six-year term of current President Halimah Yacob ends on 13 September. She is the eighth and first woman President of the country. The 2017 presidential election in Singapore was a reserved election in which only members of the Malay community were allowed to contest. During that time Halimah was nominated as the President as there was no other candidate.

The Singapore Electoral Department (ELD) said in a statement on Friday morning, “Voting will continue until 8 pm, so voters are advised to come to the polling station a little later in the day, especially in the afternoon when the queues are shorter.” The department said, “We expect voters to have patience and understanding in dealing with the morning queues.” This is the first presidential election in Singapore since 2011. Indian-origin Singapore-born economist Shanmugaratnam, 66, formally launched his presidential campaign last month with a pledge to develop the country’s culture to keep it a “shining spot” in the world.

Shanmugaratnam is one of the three candidates selected under strict criteria. Singapore has a rigorous qualification process for candidates running for the presidency. Shanmugaratnam, who entered politics in 2001, has held public sector and ministerial positions with the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) for more than two decades. The first presidential election in Singapore was held on 28 August 1993.
