Singapore, 26 August (Hindustan). Presidential elections in Singapore are due next week. The Indian-origin candidate in this election, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, has claimed that Singapore is ready for a non-Chinese prime minister. Thurman, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, described it as a symbol of the progress of society in a country dominated by a population of Chinese origin.
During an election meeting to share his vision for the presidency, Thurman said that Singaporeans view people as a whole. If someone comes to the fore who is a better candidate for the Prime Minister, then that person can be made the Prime Minister. I believe they can do this. He said it is a symbol of Singapore’s progress as a society. Singapore is ready for a non-Chinese prime minister any time.
The 66-year-old Thurman quoted former US President Barack Obama as saying that racism is a factor in politics everywhere. Thurman, a former deputy prime minister of Singapore, resigned from the ruling People’s Action Party in July to run for the presidency. Singaporeans are to vote for the 9th President on 1 September. Economist Thurman also said that government policies alone cannot make Singapore a fairer and better place. He said that instead things should be taken deeper and that the next phase of Singapore’s development is to focus on the things that cannot be measured.
