Union Minister RK Singh on Monday urged electricity consumers to use smart prepaid meters. He said that this can reduce the electricity bill by up to 2.5 percent. Releasing the report on smart meters here, Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister Singh said that installation of smart prepaid meters reduces operational and financial costs for electricity suppliers as consumers deposit advance amount in their accounts.
Singh said, “If you have a smart prepaid meter, the cost of electricity will be reduced by two to two and a half percent and this will benefit the consumers.” The minister said that using smart meters will make the system digital and automated and overall This will increase efficiency. It will also help in energy accounting. This will help in identifying areas that need attention. As per the report, users of smart prepaid meters are getting a better experience as compared to the traditional post-paid meter system of bills.
92 per cent of the surveyed consumers said that it is easy to install a smart meter, while 50 per cent said that it would improve the electricity bill. According to the survey by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, about 63 per cent of the respondents said they would ask other consumers to install smart meters. 4,500 people from 18 districts of six states… Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh… participated in the survey.
