On the strength of opener Tony de Jorji’s unbeaten 119-run innings, South Africa defeated India by nine wickets with 45 balls to spare in the second ODI here on Tuesday, leveling the three-match series 1-1. Man of the Match Jorji hit nine fours and six sixes in his unbeaten innings of 122 balls and laid the foundation of victory by making a partnership of 130 runs in 167 balls with Reeza Hendricks (52) for the first wicket. After making a partnership of 76 runs in 83 balls with Rassie van der Dussen (36) for the second wicket, he gave the team victory by hitting a six. Reeza Hendricks took advantage of the lease of life he got at the beginning of the innings and hit seven fours in his 81-ball innings. Dusen hit five fours in his 51-ball innings.
The Indian team was out for 211 runs after being invited to bat first. South Africa achieved the target by losing two wickets in 42.3 overs. India won the first match by eight wickets while the series decider will be played on Thursday. Opener B Sai Sudarshan and captain Lokesh Rahul scored half-centuries but South Africa bowled out India for 211 runs in 46.2 overs. Sudarshan scored 62 runs in 83 balls with the help of seven fours and one six, while Rahul scored 56 runs in 64 balls with the help of seven fours. Both added 68 runs for the third wicket. The other batsmen of the Indian team, which registered an easy eight-wicket victory in the first match of the series, could not stand up to the South African bowlers.
For South Africa, Andre Berger took three wickets while Buren Hendricks and Keshav Maharaj took two wickets each. Chasing the target, Reeza Hendricks and Jorji made a cautious start against the Indian fast bowlers in the beginning of the innings. Reeza also got a lease of life when Ruturaj Gaikwad took an easy catch in the slips. Left-handed batsman Jorji, however, kept the pressure away by hitting fours against Mukesh Kumar and Arshdeep. Jorji did not give the bowler a chance to hold his line length by hitting a four against Kuldeep Yadav who came to bowl in the 15th over and then a six in his next over. He completed his half-century in 55 balls by hitting a four against Akshar Patel in the 18th over. Reeza Hendricks hit a four on Kuldeep in the 21st over and Jorji hit a six to complete the team’s century of runs.
He completed his half-century in 71 balls by taking two runs against Arshdeep after hitting a hat-trick four against Avesh Khan in the 24th over. The Indian team finally got its first success in the 28th over. While trying to hit a six off Arshdeep’s ball, Hendricks played the ball into the hands of Mukesh. Dusen hit a four against Mukesh as soon as he came to the crease, while Jorji scored 17 runs in this over by hitting a four and a six. Dusen then continued his aggressive streak by hitting two fours against Arshdeep. Jorji completed his first century in 109 balls by taking two runs after hitting a six against Tilak Verma in the 37th over. Another makeshift bowler Rinku Singh got Dusen caught by Samson behind the wicket on his second ball but Jorji gave the team victory by hitting a six on Sudarshan.
India got off to a bad start after winning the toss and being invited to bat first. Ruturaj hit a four against Burger on the first ball of the innings but was LBW on the second ball. Berger and Lizard Williams troubled Sudarshan and Tilak (10 runs in 30 balls) in the initial overs but both batted carefully in the initial powerplay. Sudarshan hit some brilliant fours during this period. Tilak, however, became Burger’s second victim in the 12th over. Sudarshan hit the first six of the match against Maharaj and then completed his half-century for the second consecutive match with a single in the 20th over. Rahul, who batted cautiously in the beginning of his innings, hit fours against Vian Mulder by playing pull shots on consecutive balls. He then hit fours against Williams (one wicket for 49 runs) and Aiden Markram (one wicket for 28 runs) and took the team’s score to 100 runs in the 24th over.
Williams broke the 68-run partnership for the third wicket by dismissing Sudarshan on a ball with extra bounce. Sanju Samson (12) once again failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Rahul completed his half-century in 60 balls by hitting a four and then three runs against Maharaj. Debutant Rinku (16) hit a six in the same over due to which the team scored 16 runs from the 35th over. After this, Burger made Rahul his third victim while Rinku was stumped by Maharaj’s ball. Indian team’s score became 169 runs for six wickets. Maharaj then dismissed Kuldeep Yadav (one) and Markram dismissed Axar Patel (seven). Avesh Khan (nine) and Arshdeep Singh (18) then hit a six each, taking the team’s score beyond 210 runs.
