South Africa’s foreign ministry summoned the US ambassador on Friday over allegations made a day earlier. The US ambassador had alleged that South Africa had provided arms and ammunition to Russia fighting the war against Ukraine. A statement posted on Twitter by spokesman Clayson Monila said South Africa’s Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor will speak to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken amid the ongoing diplomatic developments over the allegations made by the United States.
The statement said Pandor would speak with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (effectively the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The US ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigetti, told a news conference on Thursday that South Africa loaded arms and ammunition onto a Russian ship at the Simon’s Town naval base near the city of Cape Town in December last year. Brigetti said that the weapons were then taken to Russia. Brigetti said, “We (US) are convinced that weapons were loaded on that ship and I would stake my life on the accuracy of this claim.” Brigetti’s comments were confirmed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. that the investigation into the visit of the Russian cargo ship Lady R in December is ongoing.
